Mindfulness is a way of calming the mind in the present moment.
It is a way of ‘Just Being’, switching from ‘Auto Pilot’, letting go of
restless thinking and negative ‘Self Talk’. Although Mindfulness has its
origins in Buddhism and has been practised for thousands of years for
calming the overactive mind, relieve stress, anxiety, depression and
even help with pain, it has become very popular in the West since the
1970’s. Mind Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed by Jon
Kabat-Zinn, American Professor Emeritus of medicine at the
Massachusetts Medical Centre, Boston USA.
Mindfulness can be practised by anybody, anywhere, and at almost
any time. The goal is to bring you into the present moment so that you
can experience your thoughts and feelings non-judgementally and help
you stop worrying about the past and the future.
Mindfulness can be performed in various ways from the Body Scan,
Breath Awareness, Yoga, Walking Meditation, Mindful Eating, Mindful
Cooking, Thought Awareness, Meditation and much more.
Our Mindfulness sessions will start off with deep relaxation, calming
the body and mind. We will focus on Breath Awareness, a type of
meditation to calm our thoughts and then we will move onto the Body
Scan, focussing on the sensations felt throughout the body and learn
how to cope with undesirable feelings that arise. We will finish off the
session with a guided visualisation. As we progress with our sessions,
we will explore different ways we can be mindful in our everyday lives
and on how to apply what we have learnt when we are feeling anxious,
stressed, in pain or depressed. We will end with a cuppa and a chat,
Your facilitator for the Mindfulness Session will be Annette Jones. BA Hons, PG Cert, MA.
